Types of Cerebral Palsy

This type of CP is the most common.

Athetoid Cerebral Palsy

Athetoid cerebral palsy is a less common form of CP.  The most common symptom is the involuntary movements, in particular in the arms or face area.  It is usually difficult with this form of CP to maintain posture, or even to sit or walk.  These symptoms are due to the fact that athetoid cerebral palsy is damage to the cerebellum section of the brain, which is responsible for sending signals to sustain posture and fluid movements.

Ataxic Cerebral Palsy

People with ataxic cerebral palsy have very low muscle tone, which causes the movements to be unstable and unbalanced.  It is common to walk with your feet at a distance, and often tremble due to the lack of muscle coordination. This is one of the rarest forms of CP.
